Usual adult dose
Acute or recurrent vaginal candidiasis: a single dose of 150 mg. Mucosal candidiasis (except vaginal): 100 mg daily given for 7-14 days in oropharyngeal candidiasis; for 14-30 days in other mucosal infections (e. g. oesophagitis, candiduria). Systemic candidiasis and cryptococcal infections (including meningitis): 400 mg initially then 200 mg daily, increased if necessary to 400 mg daily; treatment continued according to response.
Use in children
3 to 6 mg/kg of body weight daily.
Rifampicin reduces plasma concentration of Fluconazole. Fluconazole has shown to prolong prothrombin time in subjects receiving warfarin. Plasma concentration of sulfonylureas & theophylline is possibly increased. Effect of phenytoin is enhanced.
Fluconazole should not be used in patients with known hypersensitivity to Fluconazole or to related triazole compounds.
Fluconazole is generally well tolerated. The commonest side effects associated with Fluconazole are nausea, abdominal discomfort, diarrhoea & flatulence; occasional abnormalities of liver enzymes; rarely rash; angioedema, anaphylaxis and Stevens-Johnson syndrome also reported.
Fluconazole should be used cautiously in pregnancy. Use of Fluconazole in nursing mother is not recommended.
Fluconazole should be taken cautiously in patients with renal impairment.
