Duodenal ulcer, gastric ulcer, reflux esophagitis, treatment of ulcers induced by NSAIDs treatment of ulcers resistant to H2 antagonist, eradication of H. pylori (in combination with antibiotics).
Usual adult dose
Gastric ulcer: 40 mg daily in the morning for 4 weeks, continued for further 4 weeks If not fully healed.
Duodenal ulcer: 40 mg once a day in the morning. Healing usually occurs within 2 weeks. If the ulcer has not healed after initial course of therapy, an additional 2-week course of Pantoprazole may be given.
Reflux esophagitis: 20-40 mg once a day in the morning. Healing usually occurs within 4 weeks. If the ulcer has not healed after initial course of therapy, an additional 4-weeks course of Pantoprazole may be given.
Eradication of H. Pylori:
Pantoprazole 40 mg twice daily along with Clarithromycin 500 mg twice daily and Amoxycillin 1 gm twice daily or Metronidazole 400 mg twice daily for 7 days.
No drug interaction have been reported in a long series of studies examining reactions with contraceptives, diazepam, diclofenac, ethanol, caffeine, metoprolol, theophylline, digoxin, phenytoin. nifedipine and warfarin.
Pantoprazole is contraindicated in patients who are hypersensitive to any of its ingredients.
Pantoprazole is well tolerated with most side effects being mild and transient. Reported side effects include diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain, headache and dizziness, but all less than 1%; also reported fever, liver enzyme changes and raised triglyceride.
Because the liver is involved in the metabolism and excretion of Pantoprazole, people with liver disease may require dosage modification. It should be used with caution in patients with liver disease, in pregnancy and in breast feeding.
